The problem is not ‘can a conscious robot be made?’ but can a conscious entity know what it is like to be a Robot? A robot might have something analogous to consciousness which it can ‘feel’. After all a robot has a center of gravity about which it might move. It has a mathematical and geometric pattern which its parts collectively follow as a whole. It is operated by the flow of electrons and the transduction of electrical impulses through induction and capacitance and in the case of batteries – conversion of chemical to electrical and mechanical work. Its different components are connected into a whole. The particular forces which constructed it evolved and so its ‘self’ is imbibed with a contemporaneous evolutionary ‘zeitgeist’. Just like us – it may never ‘know’ where the energy flowing through it comes from. its off state might be equivalent to our sleep state. indeed it might have remnant electical charges of different natures in its off state. it would age as we do.
