Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs) are unique investments that combine the tax benefits of a limited partnership (LP) with the liquidity of common stock. Many investments in oil, natural gas and coal are structured as MLPs. My current MLP recommendation in Dividend PRO yields 8.1% and has hedged its exposure to commodity prices, thereby virtually guaranteeing its ability to pay out these high rates of income.
High-yielding Utility Stocks were the best-performing sector in 2011, boasting 15% returns as investors looked for a safe haven from the global economic turmoil. Utilities also perform better than long-term bonds, if the economy strengthens and interest rates rise. I am watching several utilities that are yielding 5% or more that I can recommend, if the stock market turns south.
Business Development Companies (BDCs) are very similar to venture capital funds, helping grow small companies in the initial stages of their development. BDCs are required to pay out 90% of earnings as dividends; they do not have to pay corporate income tax but the dividends are generally taxed as ordinary income to the shareholders. One BDC on my Dividend PRO watch list yields a whopping 13.2%. And it has low leverage, allowing it to weather any economics storms without having to liquidate assets at fire-sale prices.

Aid Effectiveness
The Center’s work on aid effectiveness focuses on the policies and practices of bilateral and multilateral donors. It includes analyzing existing programs, monitoring donor innovations, and designing and promoting fresh approaches to deliver aid.
Capital Flows/Financial Crises
CGD examines the impacts of financial regulations on capital account volatility, as well as mechanisms to further domestic financial deepening in emerging markets to prevent instability and enable growth. The Center’s research also deals with approaches to crisis resolution and the potential of foreign direct investment to promote growth.
Climate Change
CGD’s work on climate change examines current and future impacts on developing countries, identifies how rich countries can help developing countries become more climate resilient, seeks policy mechanisms to create low-carbon economies in rich and developing countries, and gathers and discloses emissions-related data to inform the policy dialogue and boost incentives for steep cuts in the emissions of heat-trapping gases.
Debt Relief
CGD was founded in 2001 in part because of the concern our founding chairman, Edward W. Scott Jr., had about the debt burden of the poorest countries. We are uniquely positioned to work both on the intellectual underpinnings of debt relief and the implementation of specific policies. The Center’s first book, Delivering on Debt Relief, by Nancy Birdsall and John Williamson helped to frame the debate and contributed to the structure of the financing arrangements for the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative (HIPC). Despite the impressive successes of HIPC/MDRI (Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative) in reducing poor-country debt, the issue remains vitally important―and a key part of CGD’s work.
Economic Growth
Though growth is a necessary condition for development, not all growth benefits the poor. CGD’s work on this topic includes exploring strategies for ensuring that economic growth is “pro-poor” and that donor organizations and government agencies encourage broad-based, pro-poor growth.
Education
Recognizing that education is a linchpin of development, CGD investigates promising new approaches for rich countries to improve education outcomes in the poorer world. CGD research in this area focuses on the benefits of educating girls, the effectiveness of global education programs, strategies for achieving universal primary education, and the potential application of Cash on Delivery (COD) aid to the education sector.
Finance
Financial services—savings, credit, insurance, money transfers—are vital yet intangible aspects of economic infrastructure. CGD’s work on financial services analyzes how to strengthen, deepen, and broaden financial systems in poor countries to maximize the benefits for poor households and improve development prospects. p>
Food and Agriculture
More than a billion people in developing countries suffer from chronic hunger. Long a neglected topic, the role of agriculture in promoting pro-poor growth is attracting renewed attention in the United States and internationally. CGD’s work in this area focuses on how rich countries’ agricultural policies and practices impact people and economic development in the poor world.
Fragile States
CGD research on fragile states examines how rich countries and other development actors can best assist fragile states and their citizens; related work focuses on understanding the transition from immediate post-conflict assistance to longer-term development assistance.
Global Health Policy
CGD’s work on global health aims to improve the effectiveness of policies and actions of donors (bilateral aid agencies, philanthropic foundations, and multilateral organizations) and to enhance the coordination between these public agents and the private sector.
Technology
Technology plays an increasingly important role in delivering effective aid and development programs. As governments and donor agencies strive to discover better responses to old and new challenges—to launch a Green Revolution in Africa, or to slow and adapt to climate change, for example—technology and innovation hold the promise of unleashing new solutions to benefit poor people. From analytical work on mobile phone-based banking to the use of biometrics to facilitate cash-transfer programs, CGD’s research and practical ideas are helping to shape the integration of technology and development.

Globalization has brought many benefits, yet there is growing contention over how these benefits are shared and increasing recognition that globalized markets require greatly improved global governance. Governance/Democracy
Efficient and resilient governance systems are essential for ensuring basic public services, fostering trade, attracting private investment, and managing aid flows. CGD’s work on the issue focuses on how rich-country policies and practices strengthen—or inadvertently undermine—developing-country institutions.
Inequality
CGD works to reduce the enormous and growing gaps between the richest and poorest countries and to increase the recognition of the social and economic costs of extreme inequality within countries. The Center’s extensive work in these and related areas—including the inequality dimensions of such issues as global health, education, trade, and migration, among others—contributes to reducing poverty and inequality worldwide.
International Financial Institutions
CGD research examines how the International Financial Institutions or IFIs—the IMF, World Bank, multilateral development banks, and other international development agencies—can become more responsive to the needs of developing countries and ensure that growth opportunities they promote reach the world’s poorest people.
Migration and Development
While most of the rich-world migration debate focuses on how migrants affect the places they move to, CGD conducts rigorous, independent research to examine the effects of labor mobility on migrants themselves and their places of origin.
Population and Development
Many people know that development shapes population trends—for example, rising incomes usually lead to falling birthrates. But the reverse is also true: population trends can impede or hasten development. CGD’s work on population focuses on this often neglected interaction.
Poverty
Poverty refers to the condition of not being able to afford basic human necessities such as food, water, housing, and health care. Finding ways to reduce the poverty that afflicts more than half the world’s people is a core part of CGD’s mission and is reflected in the many research topics that directly address the issue, such as health, education, trade, debt relief, aid effectiveness, and migration.
Private Investment
A thriving private sector is essential to long-term development. CGD research includes examination of donor efforts to help developing countries improve their business climate and foster entrepreneurship, as well as research into ways to increase the positive impacts—and avoid pitfalls—of foreign direct investment.
Regions
CGD’s work is not explicitly organized along geographic or regional lines. Nonetheless, many CGD researchers have significant regional expertise and some CGD intellectual outputs are especially relevant to particular regions listed on the subpages within this topic: Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe-Russia, and Latin America.
Trade

No Comments In taking some time to reflect and think about what causes me to pull out my credit card and buy a product, I started to really focus on what was the main ingredient to getting your list and subscribers to purchase from you especially in this day where more and more skepticism is taking place online than ever before.
In today’s internet based world, its sometimes easy to forget that we are humans that like the human touch at times. I actually like to feel like I know someone when I purchase from them. Now this isn’t always the case, but for the most part, if I am going to pay big bucks for a product, I want to know who that person is that is selling it and have some type of connection.
I am a lot less hesitant to spend money when I have seen videos of the person, or interacted with them in some way. For me, it makes a difference because I want to know that if there is a problem or some type of support I can get it if I need it.
Lets consider this for a minute. All the top successful internet marketers preach that “The money is in the list” and while I believe that is true, I also believe that is only half the story.
It’s not just having a list that will make you successful. Its the relationship you build with your list that will get you sales. Its your personal touch that will really help you be successful.
With high touch marketing you don’t have to have a big list to convert sales, by constantly providing value and communicating with your list regularly not just with sales pitch emails.
So we are going to compare what high touch marketing is vs. low touch marketing. We will also look at some of the ways that you can implement strategies that will help your list get to know, like, and trust you, so they will be willing to pull out their credit cards and purchase.
First lets look at low touch marketing….
Low touch marketing is also what I consider to be low value marketing.
It is simply where you blast emails off with the hope of a purchase. You don’t really show to much of your human side, and do very little to connect with the recipient of your emails.
Low touch marketing only has one thing in mind and its to get a sale. It is not focused on what the problems are of the person who is reading, but only on the fact that getting a sale will satisfy your craving to make money.
Low touch marketing really is where I believe spam and other forms of unwanted, un-asked for advertisements come from. I personally don’t really get upset anymore when I get spam because I always try to look at it like an opportunity for me to stand out from the crowd. To stand out from the low touch, low value marketing that really plagues our industry.
Low value marketing is when you take the opportunity to send an email to someone that didn’t ask to receive it from you, and have gotten no value from you at all.
Now, let me just say that you can build a list and blast to them this way, but the responsiveness will be low, and that means you will need to grow a much bigger list than those that spend the time to update regularly and connect.
I believe people now days are seeking more high touch when they purchase. Why do I believe this? Because that what I am looking for also?
For instance, even when I am out and about in town, in the stores I am looking for good friendly, and quick service. That doesn’t change for me when I come online, as a matter of fact, I carry that same attitude online.
High touch, great attitude and high value motivational based selling gets me to buy almost every time.
I always look at what motivates me to buy, and then turn right around and implement that into my strategy because if I have thought about, more than likely my subscribers have too.
People have been there done that and pitched over and over again and they want something different.
The good news is, there are several things you can do to connect with your list on a regular basis. There are several ways that they can connect with you.
Now if your don’t have a list, the best place for you to start of course would be listbuilders like ViralURL, Viralinbox, and Viralhosts. From these list builders you can begin to use a shared list and build your personal list.
Some ways to practice high touch marketing…
Send out an email survey to your list and ask them what their biggest struggles are in their business or in whatever niche you are in some questions that pertain to that niche. With the answers they provide you can taylor your message and products to what they need. A good place for surveys is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/
In an attempt to connect with your subscribers on a personal level, you can also implement video emails into your marketing. Their are several video email providers nowadays that a simple search on Google will bring up a few for you. If you don’t want to invest in a video email system, a simple YouTube video will work just fine as well.
By making a video and talking directly to your subscribers you can make a big touch impact on the them where they will feel like they actually know you on personal level sometimes. I personally make myself available to my list via Skype, and via Facebook.
I just recently sent out an email blast on ViralURL with my Elite membership and got two people that connected with me on Skype. I can now chat with them, find out what they need, and give them a product or service that meets that need.
That is another great way for you to connect with your list is on Facebook. At the time of this blog post, there is currently over 800 million users on Facebook alone and growing daily. More than likely your subscribers are on facebook which means you can connect and interact. Send out a blast and tell them to request your friendship as you would love to connect with them.
If you have a Facebook fan page, invite your subscribers over to the page “like” it and ask questions or to interact with you so you can help them.
Facebook also has a video update feature that you can use to post video status updates on your wall. You simply have your webcam connected, turn it on, and start talking. This is a great way to get your face in front of your friends and followers. The human touch goes a long way in marketing.
Through this strategy, you will begin to build value and trust with your prospects so that when you send out those offers via email they will be more apt to purchase from your recommendation.
Remember, connect with your list, and I believe you will be surprised with the results you get. Push yourself to go implement one thing on this and then blast it to your list and see what happens, I think you will surprised.

Testing the Bull’s Resolve
There’s no denying the tremendous performance of domestic equities in the first quarter of 2012. The Dow surged some 8% during Q1, but that jump was small potatoes when compared to the 12% gain in the S&P 500 and the whopping 19% spike in the NASDAQ Composite. These gains are impressive even during boom times, but considering they’ve come in the face of weak economic fundamentals, more debt woes in Europe, and a slowing Chinese economy, the gains through the first three months of the year have been truly impressive.
Today, I’ve read several stories about Wall Street analysts that remain wildly bullish on the domestic equity market. Some stories have claimed we have a lot more room to run, and that stocks could soar another 30-40% this year. According to one analyst, the Fed’s low interest rate policy has made traditionally less risky assets much more risky than investing in stocks. He thinks the lack of yield on cash and bonds will drive more money out of these assets and into stocks. In turn, he predicts much more equity buying.
This thesis is interesting but I suspect it won’t come to fruition. I think the more likely scenario is that this bull will run out of gas sooner rather than later. In fact, during the last two trading days, we’ve seen stocks come under pressure from the realization that the Federal Reserve won’t be extending its current bond buying program. Then there’s European worries creeping back into the market (more on this in a moment).
We now are seeing stocks fall below 1,400 on the S&P 500. The 1,400 level is important, since the S&P has been trading around that mark for the past several weeks. I think the next big test for this bull will be earnings. Over the next several weeks, we’re going to get a sense of how companies did during Q1 2012. If the top and bottom lines are strong, and especially if corporate outlooks look promising, we could see more buying. The reaction to Bernanke’s confirmation that the Fed would remain accommodative for some time was predictable, with stocks first knocking on the door of multi-year highs, and then smashing through that door with ease.
On the other hand, failure to meet expectations and/or muted outlooks by corporations for the remainder of the year really could cause a rapid sell-off that you won’t want to get caught in.

Europe’s Woes Flare
First, debt problems slammed Greece. Now, they are hitting Spain.
Recent events in Spain have emerged that make the country the next potential hotspot that could flare up into a recessionary fire in Europe. The latest headlines in Spain reveal that the nation’s budget/deficit issues are coming to a head.
Yesterday’s bond auction in Spain was pretty weak, with the country only selling 2.3 billion euros worth of 4-8 year debt at yields sharply higher than previous auctions. Spanish bond yields have risen back above 5.5%, and that trend doesn’t augur well for the country’s economy, or the European Union. It also doesn’t bode well for Spain’s stock market, which has pulled back significantly over the past year.
The chart here of the iShares MSCI Spain Index (EWP) shows the cratered sell-off in the country’s stock market. I think this situation could be the first big domino to fall in the European Union. If we see Spain go the way of Greece in terms of having to impose hefty austerity measures, it could put some serious pressure on global markets going forward.
Now, lest you think I’m too concerned about the situation in Spain, consider what the country’s Budget Minister Cristobal Montoro said in a recent news conference after delivering the nation’s cost-cutting budget.
“Spain is a critical situation,” Montoro said. “That is what we’re trying to address.”
When you consider that Spain will borrow 186.1 billion euros this year, and that its debt-to-GDP ratio will rise to 79.8% from 68.5% in 2011, you get a sense of the problematic situation. Then when you factor in that the European Union limit on debt-to-GDP ratio is 60%, you see that Spain is in dire straits.
So far, the selling in Spanish stocks hasn’t had a big impact on global equities, but all of that could change quickly if we see Europe’s debt issues continue to spread to more and more countries.

ETF Talk: Small Caps Ride High
Small-cap exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have been on a decided uptrend so far in 2012. Despite the market’s pullback today, ProShares Ultra SmallCap600 ETF (SAA) is up 20.2% so far this year through the close of trading yesterday. The following chart shows the fund’s recovery from the plunge it took in the second half of 2011.
ProShares Ultra SmallCap600 seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, that correspond to twice the daily performance of the S&P SmallCap 600 Index. As a result, the fund is designed to give you double the gains that the index would achieve. However, the fund also would give you twice the downside of any pullback in the index. You need to be aware of the heightened risk that a leveraged fund such as this one carries before you consider investing in it.
On the plus side, I want to bring your attention to the fund’s diversification. At year-end 2011, the index that the fund is intended to mirror had the following five sectors as its top holdings: financial, 19.28%; consumer, non-cyclical, 19.10%; industrial, 18.25%; consumer, cyclical, 15.75%; technology, 10.96%. As a result, SSA is not overly dependent on the success of any one sector.
The top five holdings of SAA, as of the close of trading on April 3, were: Kilroy Realty Corp Com, 0.63%; Salix Pharmaceuticals Ltd., 0.61%; Mid-America Apartment, 0.55%; Cubist Pharmaceuticals, 0.54%; and Tanger Factory Outlet, 0.54%. Salix and Cubist give the fund two pharmaceutical companies in its top five holdings. Cubist also was among the top holdings of iShares S&P SmallCap 600 Index ETF (IJR), the fund that I featured in last week’s ETF Talk. If pharmaceutical stocks continue to do well and financial stocks rebound, SSA has the potential to soar.
However, today’s market pullback shows that nothing is guaranteed. SSA dropped and its leverage caused it to fall twice as much as its related index. Leveraged funds can boost your profit or worsen your losses, so only invest in them if you understand the potential rewards and risks.

A Public Resignation and Your Best Interest
A recent article generating a lot of buzz is the very public resignation letter printed in The New York Times written by a Goldman Sachs employee named Greg Smith. In his letter, Smith cites as the chief reason for his departure the changing culture at Goldman where, as Smith puts it, “the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money.”
Basically, Smith is accusing Goldman of not acting in the best interest of its clients, but rather acting in the best interest of Goldman’s profits.
Now, I am all for a company making profits. Without profits, there would be no reason for a company to exist. However, when it comes to managing money for a client, the client’s interests always must be put first. The profit motive for the managing company always must take a backseat to the client’s interest.
I actually think it’s funny that it took a public resignation letter published in the The New York Times to make people realize that the big wirehouse firms don’t always put clients’ best interests at heart. This situation is something most of us in the business have realized for some time. It also is one of the reasons why I started Fabian Wealth Strategies.

I wondered if my friend had been taken over by an alien life form. She’s the type who’s always reaching for her Android smartphone faster than Billy the Kid to get directions or look up a bit of trivia online.
I must have looked puzzled, because she added, “I’ve put my phone on a data diet.”
“Ah,” I said, getting the picture. She didn’t want to download the game while on her cellular network. She was waiting until she could connect to a Wi-Fi network.
To avoid hefty cellular overage charges and data throttling, millions of smartphone and tablet users are keeping close eyes on what their gadgets are eating.
Like weight-loss diets, the key to a successful data diet is replacing bad habits with good ones, while not getting too restrictive. After all, what’s the point of having a smartphone if all you do is use it like a dumb phone?
The first step involves getting a handle on how much data you actually consume. Most people don’t know —or greatly underestimate — what common activities cost them in terms of data use.
What’s a typical day like in the life of your 4G Android? Let’s say it’s sending 25 emails, visiting 25 web pages, streaming one hour of music and 10 minutes of video. That will add up to about 3.75GB of data in a month — not good if you’re on Verizon’s 2GB tier or AT&T’s 3GB tier. For every 1GB you go over, you’re charged an extra $10.
Each of the four major wireless carriers — AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile — has a data calculator on its site that will help you determine how much data you need. Once you know that, it’s time to get smarter about how you use your smartphone.
The simplest and most effective way to trim cellular data calories is to use Wi-Fi whenever possible. You can set any Android or iOS gadget to automatically connect to known Wi-Fi networks.
Try to confine all streaming and downloading to when you’re on a free Wi-Fi connection. You can watch downloaded video and music while you’re on the go.
Did you know that you can download portions of Google Maps and refer to them offline? Navigate to the Labs section of Google Maps on your Android phone and enable the feature called Pre-cache map area. Now you can download 10-square-mile sections of maps. In addition to being a money-saver, that can be a real time-saver if you’re going somewhere unfamiliar and aren’t sure if you’ll even have cellular coverage.
These tips will curb the appetites of the major data hogs in your life, but you probably have a few data nibblers lurking on your phone that could deal you an unpleasant surprise.
Do you use a lot of free ad-supported apps? If so, you need to know that they’re constantly connecting to the Internet to download fresh ads. It might actually save you money in the long run to instead choose the paid version of these types of apps.
Your email and social networking apps are probably also connecting to the Internet in the background so you can stay in the loop. In Settings, you can choose to turn off automatic syncing and check for updates manually. Likewise, you can stop the camera and other apps from constantly using the phone’s GPS to track location.
Finally, sign up to get your carrier’s overage alerts and get in the habit of checking your data usage two or three times a week. If your carrier doesn’t offer a data-monitoring app or you’d like a more full-featured third-party app, look at My Data Manager and Onavo for Android. For iPhone, consider My Data Usage Pro or Onavo’s innovative data-compressing app.
With just a little proactive monitoring, it can become almost easy to keep the hungry beast under control.

a little bit of this and that
Some fun commentary on the maps of my favorite childhood places.
In personal news, my son finished a book yesterday and then told his dad he should read it, because it was really good! Our work here is done. Except for the part where he reads the book. That’s almost done, since it was pretty short.
The book was one of the “Zack Files” series by Dan Greenburg, which I find amusingly meta, because while I was pregnant, I read Greenburg’s Confessions of a Pregnant Father, which was about the birth of his son, Zack.

kindle users, act fast
Falcon’s Dragon by Luli Gray is free today for the Kindle but probably won’t be for long. This is two books in one: I don’t think I ever read book 2 and I can’t seem to dig up my review for book 1, but I remember thinking highly of it. The blurbs from review journals would seem to support that opinion.

Nonfiction Monday: Celebrate Hanukkah
Celebrate Hanukkah by Deborah Heiligman. National Geographic, 2008 (1-4263-0293-0) $6.95 pb
Aside from a short mention of how astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman spun the dreidel in zero gravity — “it spins forever!” — the most notable feature of this nonfiction book is the color photographs, which show Jewish children and Hanukkah celebrations all over the world. How fascinating to see Jews celebrating in India, Uganda and Rome. The text is simple and a little dull; surprisingly, the most interesting sections are in the collected information at the end, which includes a map of where the photos were taken, a glossary of terms, insights into the holiday from a Rabbi, a bibliography for further reading and a photo of Hoffman with his space traveling dreidel. A good basic introduction. (3-6)

I confess — I cried
So my husband and I just happened to be in the New York Public Library (!) and were checking out their 100 year exhibit. I’d been looking at the few exhibits related to children’s books, when my husband nudged me towards a case in the middle of the room I must have walked past without noticing three or four times.
And there they were. Scuffed, worn, dirty, grey… loved. Pooh, Tigger, Kanga. Truly tiny Piglet. Eeyore. (No Owl, Rabbit or Roo — poor Kanga!) I’d known there were there, but I’d completely forgotten.
Museums and libraries are amazing things.
(This explains why no Roo, but did Owl and Rabbit never actually exist?)

DIane Duane Classic — get it while you can
First the good news: a good deal on an ebook bundle of Diane Duane’s “Young Wizards” series. See Books on the Knob for details.
Now the bad news: Duane will be updating the series. (The ebooks on sale are the originals.) I suppose there are some good arguments for doing this, but I hate it. Children who can only read the latest, most modern stories will have no problem at all finding what they like. Not all children need to be pandered to; some like to have their imaginations and outlook stretched. My life would have been much sadder without the “dated” books of E. Nesbit, Lousia May Alcott, Edward Eager, Frieda Friedman, Elizabeth Enright. My son is enjoying some of those books right now, 30+ years later.

a kid’s opinion
My husband was buying some books for a birthday present today (the Wayside stories, you know you want to know) and a certain picture book was prominently featured on the counter. After the purchases were concluded, he discovered our son had picked it up and was reading it. He asked what he thought, to which our son said, “I don’t understand what kind of person would tell someone to go to sleep that way.”
My husband explained that sometimes when kids won’t go to sleep, parents get very frustrated and feel at the edge of their ropes, and told a few choice stories from the past.
To which our son replied, “Well now I feel guilty!”
So to everyone who worried about actual kids reading this book… it’s a good thing!

Belinda has just left the first nastygram for Gem and my son asked, “Shouldn’t she have left a nicer note?”
I was so pleased to have him recognize that, and how fascinating to see him trying to navigate the world of interactions… I didn’t think of that at all when I chose this book, but it’s really quite emotionally complex. What better place to learn about people than children’s books? It’s where I learned.

plum season
I’ve been thinking that I haven’t been making the best choices for read-alouds; the books I loved to read to myself don’t always translate. So tonight I put my mind to finding a book that would sound wonderful and came up with Little Plum by Rumer Godden. I remember how fond I was of the unique way Godden wrote sentences, blending narrative and dialog.
It’s going great; my son is responding so well to the cadence and the language. At one point he said he could just tell he was going to like this book. Since he had me read for a solid hour, I’d say so.

Review: I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President
I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President by Josh Lieb. Razorbill, (9781595143549) $8.99 pb
This is a hard book to critique, since I’m not the intended audience. It’s very creative, original and funny, which adults can appreciate, but also often gross and offensive, which not so much. Perhaps we’re better off giving this to the kids and sticking to Evil Overmom. I did appreciate its cleverness, however.
Our narrator is Oliver, the school fat boy, whom everyone thinks is mentally slow. Little do they know that he’s really an evil genius putting on an amazing front, is fabulously wealthy and unbelievably powerful, and runs everything at their school. Anyone who tries to mess with him is rewarded with flatulence caused by a drug he invented, and he goes about his day enjoying the secret root beer/chocolate milk water fountain he had installed, and the toilet kept stocked with malted milk balls.
Although he admits to being fond of his “shapeless, witless mass of mousy hair, belly fat and boobs” mother (“Do I love her? Am I capable of love? A question even I can’t answer) — Oliver utterly despises his father. But the subtext tells a different story, of a boy desperate for his dad’s approval. When he decides to show up his father by winning the election for class president, he puts forth all his brilliance and tremendous power. But Oliver, being pure evil, doesn’t realize how much “humans and their idiotic emotions” could foul up his plans. Emotions are the “only things in this world I can’t control.” Including, inevitably, his own.
The fantasy world — or is it? — is skillfully maintained, and anyone who’s ever been picked on in school will find it hard to resist the fantastical ways in which Oliver expresses his resentments and gets his revenge. I was very curious about how the story would resolve: would we ever find out if this is truth? Would Oliver ever admit to telling a story? I won’t say how it ends, except that it was both consistent with the book’s internal logic, and satisfying.
Photographs illustrate the story, but I didn’t feel they added much, and you won’t miss anything if you listen to the audio version (which is very well done, albeit tiresome at times. So much venom spewing can be painful to listen to.) I listened to audio for the first part of the book, then switched to an ebook. (Which I don’t recommend, because there are numerous comic footnotes and those are a pain in eformat.) (Suggested age range: 13 & up)

Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22. At a glance, it might sound all liberal and crunchy, but it’s the one celebration where we can say “We’re all in this equally.” We’ve got one planet to live on and there are some places we’ve made quite a mess. Share Limited Access to Your Website through Webmaster Tools
Google has launched a new product that allows verified site owners to provide third-party individuals with limited access to their site’s information and settings in Webmaster Tools. Although site owners have had the ability to provide full access for several years, the new feature grants limited permission, blocking third-party individuals from the ability to modify all settings.
By selecting the “Add or remove users” option under the “Manage site” menu on the home page, site owners can now access the new User administration page, where they can add or delete up to 100 users. The new feature also allows site owners to specify each user’s access as “Full” or “restricted.”
The “Restricted” access will provide third-party individuals with access to most data and can prompt certain actions, such as utilizing Fetch as Googlebot, and initiating message forwarding for their account.
“We hope the addition of Full and Restricted users makes management of your site in Webmaster Tools easier since you can now grant access within a more limited scope to help prevent undesirable or unauthorized changes,” wrote Jonathan Simon, a Google Webmaster Trends Analyst, in the blog announcement. Yahoo Sues Facebook Over Patent Infringement
Yesterday, March 12, 2012, in a San Jose, Calif. District Court, Yahoo filed a suit against Facebook alleging ten counts of patent infringement. It hasn’t escaped anyone’s notice that the filing comes during the hyper-buzzed buildup to Facebook’s big IPO, which is expected in May, or that both companies are current business partners.
Michael J. de la Merced, writing for the New York Times, reported late last month that representatives from both companies had met to discuss Yahoo’s then-potential suit. At the time, Yahoo stated that it had “a responsibility to its shareholders, employees and other stakeholders to protect its intellectual property,” and that it had to “insist that Facebook either enter into a licensing agreement” or that Yahoo would “move forward unilaterally to protect [its] rights.”
Reacting to yesterday’s filing, Facebook said: “We’re disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation. Once again, we learned of Yahoo’s decision simultaneously with the media. We will defend ourselves vigorously against these puzzling actions.”
The technologies Yahoo is suing over are wide-ranging, and include, as worded in the case file, “messaging, news feed generation, social commenting, advertising displays,” and click fraud prevention and privacy controls. Google Launches New Video, Provides Deeper Look Into Search
In an effort to provide the public with an inside look at how search works, Google has launched a new video documenting one of its company meetings about a possible algorithm change. Captured on December 1, 2011, the rare video documents one of Google’s weekly “Quality Launch Review” meetings held every Thursday, and, in this case, discusses a possible change to its spell correction system.
Google’s new uncut and annotated video attempts to capture the company’s thorough process of approving possible changes it makes to its algorithm. According to Google, one of the aspects of this process is that even relatively minor tweaks to its algorithm receive close examination by its search evaluation and ranking teams.
In a blog post announcing the video, Google also highlights that every improvement or tweak to the algorithm is assigned a search quality analyst to “study the impact.” Google assures the public that its search quality analyst are not part of the engineering staff creating the tweak.
When it comes to making the decisions, Google wants the public to know that it relies on detailed analysts reports and data. According to the blog announcement, sometimes these reports can be more than 25 pages long, while other times they might include specific examples to demonstrate trends in the data. According to Google, its engineers search for algorithm tweaks to improve millions of queries at once, instead of manually changing one example. Read More.

Wall Street Journal Announces Google Search Changes
The Wall Street Journal reported that Google plans to launch major changes to its search engine algorithm, changes that could affect millions of websites. In what is being described as some of the biggest changes in the company’s history, Google’s revamped search engine will be providing more data and direct answers to search queries at the top of the search engine results page, as opposed to the basic blue web links.
While Google plans to honor its current keyword-search system, the new change aims to produce “more relevant results” by introducing a new technology called “semantic search,” the process of “understanding the meaning of words.” In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Google’s top executive Amit Singhal said that semantic search will provide better search results by connecting search queries with a database of entities (such as people, places, and things) which Google has collected over the past two years. The new process will connect different words together, such as a company name with its founders or top executives.
Under semantic search, users who search for a certain city will see additional information about the city, such as its location, altitude, and average temperature, while users who search for the same city today might only receive various web links, such as the city’s visitor bureau site and Wikipedia page. Another major difference under the shift will be Google’s ability to answer complex questions without pointing to web links.
When producing answers that are not in Google’s database of entities, the updated search engine will combine the new technology with the current keyword-search system to provide results.
